Patience is a big word. Patience is a frightening word. Patience is the last thing one would wish to hear about. A Moroccan proverb goes, “Patience is the only door where people don’t jostle.” Even if you earnestly believe that patience is key to success; even if you preach patience in mosques, in speeches or in writing, it is always difficult to perceive patience as a “normal” thing. There will always come some time when you start questioning what you believe or preach if the thing you have been patient for seems still too far away. There are so many factors that may make patience hateful to many of us: society, age, chronic illness, family, etc, etc. So what to do when you have to live with patience on a daily basis –as if it were indeed a chronic illness? How do you manage your life as a patient (or patience-loving) person? How can you keep hope when everything around you inspires only despair and frustration?

Well, there is not one and only one answer to those questions. But as with big problems, one has to adopt certain strategies, which I will try to detail below:

1) If you don’t have a good Muslim friend already, then by all means look for one. Neither the Holy Koran, nor any wisdom in the world would replace a good (human) Muslim friend. I say ‘friend’, not a lover or someone to flirt with, and I say ‘human’ (that you can meet and speak to), not a pen-pal or a ‘friend’ on Facebook or the like. Such a friend –if you had one– would help you a great deal: by listening to you, by visiting or calling you (when you feel nobody cares about you), by giving you advice, by giving you the opportunity to say aloud what you think (about faith, for example) in secret. Even if you were an Imam or a great scholar, such a friend would still be a must if you were caught in a particularly harsh adversity.

Some would raise their eyebrows at the mentioning of “an Imam or a great scholar” in this regard. Well, I know several stories, of which I’ll tell you one –knowing that some would say these are isolated cases. I once was envious of someone who won prizes for writing in the then famous Muslim weekly Al-Muslimoon. He wrote wonderful things about Islam (even as a student of Islamic Studies at the Faculty (or College)). He then became an Islamic Studies Professor at another Faculty, which is an enviable job here, which enabled him to marry soon after graduation. But then, one day, he picked a quarrel with his (uneducated) wife, and as he slapped her she rushed into the kitchen and picked up a knife which she pointed threateningly at his chest. She did not kill him, fortunately. But that led to divorce after they had gotten two children. You can imagine the life of this man after that incident.

2) Avoid unnecessary problems. For example, if you know that you are jobless or have a very low income and yet you take on debts beyond your means, then why blame others for your (resulting) ordeal? If, on the contrary, you have a certain amount of money (or any savings) but you are jobless and yet you keep spending as if you were going to find a new job the next month, then why blame others if you ran out of money and became a debtor? God says:

"And let not thy hand be chained to thy neck nor open it with a complete opening, lest thou sit down rebuked, denuded." (Al-Isra : 29)

"Spend your wealth for the cause of Allah, and be not cast by your own hands to ruin; and do good. Lo! Allah loveth the beneficent" (Al-Baqara : 195)

3) Be modest. If, for one reason or another, you found yourself up to the ears in debt, then don’t expect money to fall upon you from the skies. Do seek help from humans (while waiting for God’s mercy). God does not prohibit you from asking help from humans. In fact, you won’t get such help (from humans) unless God so decides. If someone does help you, that is indeed a mercy from Allah, Who says:

"but help ye one another unto righteousness and pious duty. Help not one another unto sin and transgression, but keep your duty to Allah." (Al-Maidah : 2)

"And if the debtor is in straitened circumstances, then (let there be) postponement to (the time of) ease; and that ye remit the debt as alms giving would be better for you if ye did but know." (Al-Baqara : 280)

"If Allah touch thee with affliction, there is none that can relieve therefrom save Him, and if He touch thee with good fortune (there is none that can impair it); for He is Able to do all things. He is the Omnipotent over His slaves, and He is the Wise, the Knower." (Al-An'am : 17-18)

God is aware that some people are shy or feel that their dignity would be hurt if they "begged" and therefore cannot ask help from other people.

"(Alms are) for the poor who are straitened for the cause of Allah, who cannot travel in the land (for trade). The unthinking man accounteth them wealthy because of their restraint. Thou shalt know them by their mark: They do not beg of men with importunity. And whatsoever good thing ye spend, lo! Allah knoweth it." (Al-Baqara : 273)

But if you really need help, then don’t hesitate to seek help and assistance from your fellow humans.

"Allah asketh naught of any soul save that which He hath given it. Allah will vouchsafe, after hardship, ease." (At-Talaq : 7)

"No blame is there upon the blind nor any blame upon the lame nor any blame upon the sick nor on yourselves if ye eat from your houses, or the houses of your fathers, or the houses of your mothers, or the houses of your brothers, or the houses of your sisters, or the houses of your fathers' brothers, or the houses of your fathers' sisters, or the houses of your mothers' brothers, or the houses of your mothers' sisters, or (from that) whereof ye hold the keys, or (from the house) of a friend. No sin shall it be for you whether ye eat together or apart. But when ye enter houses, salute one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and sweet. Thus Allah maketh clear His revelations for you, that haply ye may understand." (An-Nur : 61)

I do not mean by asking help “begging”. What I mean is that you can ask somebody for a reasonable loan or something like that to be returned when possible, or maybe you could express your need to a friend in a way that he/she may take the hint and therefore offer his/her help willingly.

4) If you can, do avoid mean people (even if they happen to be members of your own family). If you don’t want to lose a sibling, then try to limit your contact with him/her to the strict minimum (if he/she is a mean person) until your hardship is over. You will certainly find other people willing to help you (for one reason or another). Don’t care of those reasons as long as they are not impermissible. You know, most people would not provide help for God’s sake.

5) Be realistic. Even if you are the most devout person on earth, you shouldn’t expect God to do everything for you. Miracles do happen, but they don’t happen in everybody’s life. God did so much to protect the first believers in Islam; He helped them in so many ways; (but to give us the example,…) He also taught them to look after themselves. He said to them, for example:

"And when thou (O Muhammad) art among them and arrangest (their) worship for them, let only a party of them stand with thee (to worship) and let them take their arms. Then when they have performed their prostrations let them fall to the rear and let another party come that hath not worshipped and let them worship with thee, and let them take their precaution and their arms. Those who disbelieve long for you to neglect your arms and your baggage that they may attack you once for all. It is no sin for you to lay aside your arms, if rain impedeth you or ye are sick. But take your precaution" (An-Nisaa : 102)

If you live in a place that is prone to earthquakes or floods, or any other sort of disaster, then it would be unwise to expect God to save the place from an earthquake or flood because of your presence in there. Even in the Koran there’s a reference to such bad places and bad happenings.

"As for the good land, its vegetation cometh forth by permission of its Lord; while as for that which is bad, only evil cometh forth (from it). Thus do We recount the tokens for people who give thanks." (Al-A'raf : 58)

"
His likeness is as the likeness of a rock whereon is dust of earth; a rainstorm smiteth it, leaving it smooth and bare." (Al-Baqara : 264)

"And the likeness of those who spend their wealth in search of Allah's pleasure, and for the strengthening of their souls, is as the likeness of a garden on a height. The rainstorm smiteth it and it bringeth forth its fruit twofold. And if the rainstorm smite it not, then the shower. Allah is Seer of what ye do. Would any of you like to have a garden of palm trees and vines, with rivers flowing underneath it, with all kinds of fruit for him therein; and old age hath stricken him and he hath feeble off spring; and a fiery whirlwind striketh it and it is (all) consumed by fire. Thus Allah maketh plain His revelations unto you, in order that ye may give thought."  (Al-Baqara : 265-266)

"Have ye taken security from Him Who is in the heaven that He will not cause the earth to swallow you when lo! it is convulsed? Or have ye taken security from Him Who is in the heaven that He will not let loose on you a hurricane? But ye shall know the manner of My warning." (
Al-Mulk : 16-17)

Another thing: if you live in a place where there is so much evil, then don’t expect God to save that place from a disaster because you personally or a few pious people like you live there.

"And guard yourselves against a chastisement which cannot fall exclusively on those of you who are wrong doers, and know that Allah is severe in punishment." (Al-Anfal : 25)

Such bad happenings could take place even in the presence of a prophet:

"And when Moses asked for water for his people, We said: Smite with thy staff the rock. And there gushed out therefrom twelve springs (so that) each tribe knew their drinking place. Eat and drink of that which Allah hath provided, and do not act corruptly, making mischief in the earth." (Al-Baqara : 60)

6) If you can, do read a lot. Don’t just read the Koran. You can read poetry and fiction, as well. You can read a bit of philosophy. You can read biographies or any inspirational material. You can read all this and more in addition to the Koran. The more you know of the world the more you understand your sufferings and the more you know how to deal with them. In so doing, you would acquire wisdom, which is in itself a great gift from Allah.

"He giveth wisdom unto whom He will, and he unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good. But none remember except men of understanding." (Al-Baqara : 269)

7) If you can, try to change the décor of your everyday life. If you live in town, why not have a stroll or ride on the outskirts and see how people out there go about their everyday life; and while you are there contemplate the landscape around you. The more you do it the more you discover new things you had taken for granted. This little "tourism" is in fact part of a believer's practise of his/her faith.

"Will they not regard the camels, how they are created? And the heaven, how it is railed?
And the hills, how they are set up?  And the earth, how it is spread?
" (Al-Gashiya : 17-20)

"Have they not observed what is before them and what is behind them of the sky and the earth?" (Saba : 9)

"By the sun and his brightness, And the moon when she followeth him, And the day when it revealeth him, And the night when it enshroudeth him, And the heaven and Him who built it, And the earth and Him who spread it, (...) " (Ash-Shams : 1-6)

"Hast thou not seen how Allah hath sent down water from the sky and hath caused it to penetrate the earth as water springs, and afterward thereby produceth crops of divers hues; and afterward they wither and thou seest them turn yellow; then He maketh them chaff. Lo! herein verily is a reminder for men of understanding." " (Az-Zumar : 21)

"Have they not travelled in the land, and have they hearts wherewith to feel and ears wherewith to hear? For indeed it is not the eyes that grow blind, but it is the hearts, which are within the bosoms, that grow blind." (Al-Hajj : 46)

"Such as remember Allah, standing, sitting, and reclining, and consider the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say): Our Lord! Thou createdst not this in vain. Glory be to Thee! Preserve us from the doom of Fire" (Al-i'Imran : 191)

8) Even if you think you are keeping your duty to God, don’t fail to implore forgiveness. In fact, asking forgiveness is a prerequisite for ease (end of your ordeal).

"And I have said: Seek pardon of your Lord, Lo! He was ever Forgiving. He will let loose the sky for you in plenteous rain, And will help you with wealth and sons, and will assign unto you Gardens and will assign unto you rivers." (Nuh : 10-12)

9) In addition to asking forgiveness, remember Allah all the time (at least in your heart).

"O ye who believe! Remember Allah with much remembrance. And glorify Him early and late." (Al-Ahzab : 41-42)

"And when the prayer is ended, then disperse in the land and seek of Allah's bounty, and remember Allah much, that ye may be successful." (Al-Jumu'a : 10)

"Who have believed and whose hearts have rest in the remembrance of Allah. Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!" (Ar-Ra'd : 28)

"Such as remember Allah, standing, sitting, and reclining, and consider the creation of the heavens and the earth, (and say): Our Lord! Thou createdst not this in vain. Glory be to Thee! Preserve us from the doom of Fire" (Al-i'Imran : 191)

10) Do amuse yourself from time to time, take rest, relax whenever you feel tired, because, as the Prophet (pbuh) said, “if the hearts get tired they become blind." And God says:

"Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as Thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector" (Al-Baqara : 286)

"Say: Who hath forbidden the adornment of Allah which He hath brought forth for His bondmen, and the good things of His providing? Say: Such, on the Day of Resurrection, will be only for those who believed during the life of the world. Thus do We detail Our revelations for people who have knowledge." (Al-A'raf : 32)

"And wherein is beauty for you, when ye bring them home, and when ye take them out to pasture." (An-Nahl : 6)

"And horses and mules and asses (hath He created) that ye may ride them, and for ornament. And He createth that which ye know not." (An-Nahl : 8)

"Have they not then observed the sky above them, how We have constructed it and beautified it, and how there are no rifts therein? And the earth have We spread out, and have flung firm hills therein, and have caused of every lovely kind to grow thereon" (Qaf : 6-7)

"and sendeth down for you water from the sky wherewith We cause to spring forth joyous orchards" (An-Naml : 60)

11) Try to avoid (excited) people who are newly married or who have just found a job, or who have just been relieved of a hardship –especially if these people used to quote a lot of Koran and Haddith during their talk with others. Because of their excitement and complacency, these people could harm you a great deal––if you (naively) expected them to be “more  thoughtful” as a result of their previous suffering.

12) Stop from time to time to meditate about your own life. If necessary, isolate yourself in open spaces (park, woods, beach, etc), where you could speak loud to yourself: ask yourself questions like, “Hasn’t there really been anything new happening in my life since the beginning of this ordeal?” ...or questions like:

"Did He not find thee an orphan and protect (thee)?  Did He not find thee wandering and direct (thee)? Did He not find thee destitute and enrich (thee)?" (Adh-Dhuha : 6-8)

Ask yourself: what was your reaction the last time you were relieved of a hardship?

"And if misfortune touch a man he crieth unto Us, (while reclining) on his side, or sitting or standing, but when We have relieved him of the misfortune he goeth his way as though he had not cried unto Us because of a misfortune that afflicted him. Thus is what they do made (seeming) fair unto the prodigal." (Yunus : 12)

As nobody will really feel what you personally feel, then nobody would speak to you in the way you would wish. Now that you are alone (far from eyes and ears) you could speak to yourself as some do in front of a mirror in the dressing-room. This sounds crazy, but you would find it as a breathing exercise! It would relieve your soul of  its “poisons” as exercise would rid your body of its poisons. By asking yourself frank questions here you would end up admitting that, after all, there’s some kind of “progress” in your life despite the overall ordeal.

13) To fight monotony and despondency, do assign yourself a long-term goal, mission or project––if you haven’t done it already. Do everything you can towards the fulfilment of this project and you’ll restore your feeling of self-importance when you realize that –at least– there’s something new happening in your life and that you’re not wasting away your time and life in this world.

"And trust thou in the Living One Who dieth not" (Al-Furqan : 58)

"Allah it is Who appointed for you the earth for a dwelling place and the sky for a canopy, and fashioned you and perfected your shapes, and hath provided you with good things. Such is Allah, your Lord. Then blessed be Allah, the Lord of the Worlds! He is the Living One. There is no God save Him. So pray unto Him, making religion pure for Him (only). Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds!" (Ghafir : 64-65)

"And your Lord hath said: Pray unto me and I will hear your prayer. Lo! those who scorn My service, they will enter hell, disgraced." (Ghafir : 60)

"Lo! We verily do help Our messengers, and those who believe, in the life of the world and on the day when the witnesses arise" (Ghafir : 51)

And  the Angels say to you: "We are your protecting friends in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. There ye will have (all) that your souls desire, and there ye will have (all) for which ye pray." (Fussilat : 31)

"
And thou (Muhammad) art not occupied with any business and thou recitest not a lecture from this (Scripture), and ye (mankind) perform no act, but We are Witness of you when ye are engaged therein. And not an atom's weight in the earth or in the sky escapeth your Lord, nor what is less than that or greater than that, but it is (written) in a clear Book. Lo! verily the friends of Allah are (those) on whom fear (cometh) not, nor do they grieve. Those who believe and keep their duty (to Allah), Theirs are good tidings in the life of the world and in the Hereafter. There is no changing the Words of Allah that is the Supreme Triumph. And let not their speech grieve thee (O Muhammad). Lo! power belongeth wholly to Allah. He is the Hearer, the Knower. Lo! is it not unto Allah that belongeth whosoever is in the heavens and whosoever is in the earth?" (Yunus : 61-66)

14) Know your human nature and start looking at people as “human beings” rather than “persons”. Try to pay attention to what people have in common: greed, arrogance, impatience, envy, etc. When you read the Koran, or autobiographies or any kind of writings, try to meditate about “the psyche” of Man. Here are examples from the Koran:

"Man prayeth for evil as he prayeth for good; for man was ever hasty." (Al-Isra : 11)

"Lo! man was created anxious, Fretful when evil befalleth him, And, when good befalleth him, grudging" (Al-Ma'arij: 19-21) (...)

"And if We cause man to taste some mercy from Us and afterward withdraw it from him, lo! he is despairing, thankless. And if We cause him to taste grace after some misfortune that had befallen him, he saith: The ills have gone from me. Lo! he is exultant, boastful" (Hud : 9-10)

"And He giveth you of all ye ask of Him, and if ye would count the bounty of Allah ye cannot reckon it. Lo! man is verily a wrong doer, an ingrate." (Ibrahim : 34)

"And when We make life pleasant unto man, he turneth away and is averse; and when ill toucheth him he is in despair." (Al-Isra : 83)

"Say (unto them): If ye possessed the treasures of the mercy of my Lord, ye would surely hold them back for fear of spending, for man was ever grudging." (Al-Isra : 100)

"And verily We have displayed for mankind in this Quran all manner of similitudes, but man is more than anything contentious." (Al-Kahf : 54)

"Man is (self) destroyed: how ungrateful!" (Abasa : 17)

"As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honoring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. But whenever He trieth him by straitening his means of life, he saith: My Lord despiseth me. Nay, but ye (for your part) honor not the orphan And urge not on the feeding of the poor, And ye devour heritages with devouring greed, And love wealth with abounding love." (Al-Fajr : 15-20)

"Lo! man is an ingrate unto his Lord, And lo! he is a witness unto that; And lo! in the love of wealth he is violent." (Al-Adiyat : 6-8)

"And He it is Who sendeth the winds, glad tidings heralding His mercy, and We send down purifying water from the sky. That We may give life thereby to a dead land, and We give many beasts and men that We have created to drink thereof. And verily We have repeated it among them that they may remember, but most of mankind begrudge naught save in gratitude." (Al-Furqan : 48-50)

15) Try to strengthen your belief in Fate and Destiny. Keep in mind verses like these:

"Naught of disaster befalleth in the earth or in yourselves but it is in a Book before We bring it into being, Lo! that is easy for Allah, That ye grieve not for the sake of that which hath escaped you, nor yet exult because of that which hath been given. Allah loveth not all prideful boasters, Who hoard and who enjoin upon the people avarice. And whosoever turneth away, still Allah is the Absolute, the Owner of Praise." (Al-Hadid : 22-24)

"
And when We make life pleasant unto man, he turneth away and is averse; and when ill toucheth him he is in despair." (Al-Isra : 83)

"No calamity befalleth save by Allah's leave. And whosoever believeth in Allah, He guideth his heart. And Allah is Knower of all things." (At-Tagabun : 11)

Also read the stories of Prophets in the Koran, such as  Sourat  Al-Qasas.

16) Beware of dreams. If you had nice dreams in your sleep, please do not over-interpret them. They might be good (authentic) dreams, but they might as well take too long to come true. So don’t disappoint yourself by pinning your hopes on the fulfilment of a nice dream you saw in your sleep.

17) Give thanks to Allah for what you have already:

"And when your Lord proclaimed: If ye give thanks, I will give you more" (Ibrahim : 7)

"And verily We gave Luqman wisdom, saying: Give thanks unto Allah; and whosoever giveth thanks, he giveth thanks for (the good of) his soul. And whosoever refuseth, Lo! Allah is Absolute, Owner of Praise." (Luqman : 12)

"If ye are thankless, yet Allah is Independent of you, though He is not pleased with thanklessness for His bondmen; and if ye are thankful He is pleased therewith for you. No laden soul will bear another's load. Then unto your Lord is your return; and He will tell you what ye used to do. Lo! He knoweth what is in the breasts (of men)." (Az-Zumar : 7)

"Few of My bondmen are thankful." (Saba : 13)

"Whoso desireth the reward of the world, We bestow on him thereof  and whoso desireth the reward of the Hereafter,  We bestow on him thereof. We shall reward the thankful." (Al-i'Imran : 145)

18) You will certainly be hurt and challenged (sometimes even from people who aren't necessarily better off than you), so be defiant without seeking to hurt anybody. Remember these verses:

"And he was building the ship, and every time that chieftains of his people passed him, they made mock of him. He said: Though ye make mock of us, yet we mock at you even as ye mock" (Hud : 38)

"And We reveal of the Quran that which is a healing and a mercy for believers though it increase the evil doers in naught save ruin." (Al-Isra : 82)

Journalism students learn that "when a dog bites a man, that is not news. "Man bites dog" is news.

A woman called a doctor live on an
Atlantic Radio program to ask why her three-year-old daughter still sucked at her baby's bottle (even if it were empty !). THAT IS NOT NEWS. Another listener later called to advise that woman to put something bitter in the feeding bottle or on its teat to make it disgusting to the child. He said that he had tried that out on his own daughter when she was three and it worked. THAT IS NOT NEWS, either. But then the man conceded that there arose a much bigger problem. "Now my daughter is 27 years old," he explained. "She is a university professor in a foreign country and yet she still sucks her thumb!" THAT IS NEWS, isn't it? But is it odd enough to provoke wonder in anyone?

So what provokes wonder in us? The Kenyan

DAILY NATION excalimed : "It’s a mystery: Africans can’t shoot Olympic arrows!" For the author of this article "it is puzzling that Africa doesn’t dominate archery yet no other continent uses bows and arrows for primary purposes as much."

In
The Unique NecklaceIbn Abd Rabbih relates the story of a tabi'i (follower of the Prophet Muhammad's Companions) who was travelling with some of his  students when they came across a drunken man singing a beautiful couplet in Arabic, something like:
My hear has become sick with love,
But there's no way to reach my love.

The tabi'i then alighted from his horse and hastened to write down those lines. Amazed, his students asked, "You write down words said by a drunken man?" The tabi'i replied: "Haven't you heard the proverb that goes 'A pearl could very well be found in the garbage.' Well, this is a pearl in a garbage!"

A man was introduced to the Abbassid caliph Harun al-Rasheed as a man of genius who could insert a hundred needles into the eyes of each other in such a way that not a single needle would fall down. The caliph asked the man to show him how he could do that, and when the latter had done that in the most brilliant manner, the caliph turned to his men, and said: "Give this man one hundred dinars and one hundred lashes." Stunned and stupefied, the genius man asked: "Majesty, I can understand why you give me one hundred dinards, but not why you give me one hundred lashes!" The caliph replied: "I give you  a hundred dinars for your genius, and a hundred lashes because you wasted your genius on trivialties."

We are all intelligent, aren't we, but do we always put our intelligence to good use?

"And they marvel that a warner from among themselves hath come unto them, and the disbelievers say: This is a wizard, a charlatan.  Maketh he the gods One God? Lo! that is an astounding thing." (Sad : 4-5)

I was once standing alone, facing our classroom, when a classmate came up to me, and said, shaking with laughter: "On my way to the Faculty (College), a group of little children stopped me, and said, 'Tell us, if you know: does a hen urinate?' You know what, I had never thought about that before!" Now I ask you the same question: does a hen urinate?

We tend to take so many things for granted--small things, I mean. How many times have you stopped to think about the tick-tock of your watch, about that tiny insect that you sometimes find scurrying across the page when you are reading through a book, about the fallen leaves in your garden or in the woods, about the human mind that made all the inventions you're using everyday? Like people in antiquity, who wondered at the Seven Wonders and forgot about the million small wonders around them, we still marvel at such big things as the Pyramids and forget to give a thought to small things in ourselves and in our environment.

People marvelled at the
Montgolfier Balloon, at the first solo nonstop transatlantic Flight in history, at the Airbus A380. They still marvel at the Great Wall of China, at the Guizeh Pyramids, at the Eiffel Tower and Lady Liberty.  We still marvel at the breathtaking performances of circus animals and clowns, at the stunning achievements of record-breaking athletes, at the extraordinay talents of our artists (that we sometimes take for gods!). Almost every week, there's a new entry into the famous Guinness World Records. There you can learn about the longest moustache, the thinnest waistline, the tallest woman, the shortest man, the largest cake--all mad records. All that man has been able "to achieve".

When people think of something, they often forget something else--something more important. When we look at ourselves in the mirror, do we think of the mirror itself? When we think of our computer, do we think of the one who invented it in the first place? When children read Harry Potter, do they think of J.K. Rowling? When we wonder at our (human) power of imagination, do we think of the One Who originated the human mind in the first place? When people wondered at how Karadzic had managed to metamorphose his appearance, how many of us wondered at the fact that although we have the same father and the same mother, we still are not identical. Even so-called "identical twins" are differenciated by their fingerprints and irises.

God said to Moses:

"And what is that in thy right hand, O Moses? He said: This is my staff whereon I lean, and wherewith I beat down branches for my sheep, and wherein I find other uses. He said: Cast it down, O Moses! So he cast it down, and Lo! it was a serpent, gliding." (Ta-ha : 17-20)

Don't worry! The chair you're sitting in is a real chair and the thing in front of you is a real computer. Just give a little more thought to those little things around you. If you haven't been doing it already, then try now to look beyond the wood and the leather, beyond the glass and the cloth, beyond the ink and the paper. Think of the source, and beyond the source, of the Originator.

You will not be wasting your time if you think about these things and more. Meditation on a regular basis may help you, one day, prevent depression, and even suicide, if -God forbid!- you suddenly find yourself in a situation where you feel like a fool, when the most obvious things become hard to understand, when your life suddenly becomes a burden, void of any meaning.

Even if you are a believer and perform all your daily rituals with the greatest deal of devotion, that may not be sufficient for you to face up to some emergencies--if your iman (belief) is not strong enough.

You may probably know the fable about that teacher who was travelling with a poor fisherman in a boat.
"Do you know the name of that star?" the teacher asked.
"No, I don't," said the fisherman.
"Then you have lost half your life!"
The teacher asked more similar questions, to which he got the same answers, to which he replied: "Then you have lost half your life!"
Then a storm overturned the boat, and the fisherman said to the teacher:
       "Can you swim?"
       "No," said the teacher.
"Then you have lost all your life!" replied the fisherman.

It's yaqeen (unshakable belief) that will enable you "to swim" through a crisis that brings you to the verge of madness. And it's meditation (at home and in the open) that will help raise your iman to yaqeen. Iman itself needs to be renewed from time to time, and with regular meditation iman can rise higher and higher. And there are so many things to meditate about.

"How many a portent is there in the heavens and the earth which they pass by with face averted!" (Yusuf : 105)

"And in the earth are portents for those whose faith is sure, And (also) in yourselves. Can ye then not see?" (Az-Zariyat : 20-21)

Meditation will purify your iman.

"And though thou try much, most men will not believe." (Yusuf : 103)

"And most of them believe not in Allah except that they attribute partners (unto Him)."

(Yusuf : 106)

Just as exercise rids your body of its "poisons", so does meditation to the "poisons" of your soul.

Meditation about small things -those things that most people don't think about- will give you a light that most people don't have.

"Is he who was dead and We have raised him unto life, and set for him a light wherein he walketh among men, as him whose similitude is in utter darkness whence he cannot emerge?" (Al-An'am : 122)

Once, an American man went missing in Australia. After three months or so, he emerged from the other end of the Australian desert, wearing an ordinary shirt and pair of trousers, with leather sandals on, and a big bottle of water in his hand. Asked why he had braved such a frightening desert alone and with so little equipment, the man said: "I just wanted to discover God." Personally, I couldn't believe my eyes and ears as I saw those TV pictures, having read about the times when Afghan camel leaders took European settlers through the uncharted deserts of the Australian continent.

But does one really need to go to a dangerous place like the Australian desert to "discover God"? It's true that most probably you won't "find" God in the stadium, in the cafe or in the shopping mall--because a lot of things will overshadow Him in there. But just go to the woods or open countryside round your town. Go there alone, with no cam, no walkman, no cigarettes. Just go in your jellaba, or jeans, or shorts, or pyjamas. Go and sit ban,g on the ground, and stop TIME for a while. Open your eyes wide, and your ears, and your heart, and you'll see how small you are and how great you are! Small, because you belong to a planet that is just a drop in the ocean compared to the Universe and you are but a drop in the ocean compared to the billions of creatures that live on this planet. Great, because you belong to a species that has turned this once deserted planet into prosperous cities, ever-growing towns, beautiful villages, nice farms and fields, with lots of good people in them--despite all the evil, all the horrors this same species has caused over time.

"Lo! We offered the trust unto the heavens and the earth and the hills, but they shrank from bearing it and were afraid of it. And man assumed it. Lo! he hath proved a tyrant and a fool."  (Al-Ahzab : 72)

Then raise your eyes to the skies and ask yourself: Does God really exist?  Is there really a life after death? Then let the Koran whisper the answer in your ear:

"Qaf. By the glorious Quran, Nay, but they marvel that a warner of their own hath come unto them; and the disbelievers say: This is a strange thing: When we are dead and have become dust (shall we be brought back again)? That would be a far return! We know that which the earth taketh of them, and with Us is a recording Book. Nay, but they have denied the truth when it came unto them, therefor they are now in troubled case. Have they not then observed the sky above them, how We have constructed it and beautified it, and how there are no rifts therein? And the earth have We spread out, and have flung firm hills therein, and have caused of every lovely kind to grow thereon, A vision and a reminder for every penitent slave. And We send down from the sky blessed water whereby We give growth unto gardens and the grain of crops, And lofty date palms with ranged clusters, Provision (made) for men; and therewith We quicken a dead land. Even so will be the resurrection of the dead." (Qaf : 1-11)

"Have We not made the earth an expanse, And the high hills bulwarks? And We have created you in pairs, And have appointed your sleep for repose, And have appointed the night as a cloak,  And have appointed the day for livelihood. And We have built above you seven strong (heavens), And have appointed a dazzling lamp, And have sent down from the rainy clouds abundant Water, Thereby to produce grain and plant, And gardens of thick foliage." (An-Nabaa : 6-16)

"Lo! therein verily is a reminder for him who hath a heart, or giveth ear with full intelligence." (Qaf : 37)

Look up at the sun: isn't it the same sun everyone sees everywhere? It's the same moon all people all around the world know--there's no other moon in our minds when we hear someone from another country or continent speak of the moon. It's the same sky, the same stars, the same earth, the same water, the same air, the same human body, the same human soul. So why couldn't it be the same God Who made all these things for us all? Shouldn't we marvel at the fact that people share the same things and yet worship diffrent gods?

"Is not He (best) who created the heavens and the earth, and sendeth down for you water from the sky wherewith We cause to spring forth joyous orchards, whose trees it never hath been yours to cause to grow. Is there any God beside Allah? Nay, but they are folk who ascribe equals (unto Him)! Is not He (best) Who made the earth a fixed abode, and placed rivers in the folds thereof, and placed firm hills therein, and hath set a barrier between the two seas? Is there any God beside Allah? Nay, but most of them know not! Is not He (best) who answereth the wronged one when he crieth unto Him and removeth the evil, and hath made you viceroys of the earth? Is there any God beside Allah? Little do they reflect! Is not He (best) Who guideth you in the darkness of the land and the sea, He Who sendeth the winds as heralds of His mercy? Is there any God beside Allah? High exalted be Allah from all that they ascribe as partner (unto Him)! Is not He (best), Who produceth creation, then reproduceth it, and Who provideth for you from the heaven and the earth? Is there any God beside Allah? Say: Bring your proof, if ye are truthful!" (An-Naml : 60-64)

"Allah is He Who created the heavens and the earth, and causeth water to descend from the sky, thereby producing fruits as food for you, and maketh the ships to be of service unto you, that they may run upon the sea at His command, and hath made of service unto you the rivers; And maketh the sun and the moon, constant in their courses, to be of service unto you, and hath made of service unto you the night and the day. And He giveth you of all ye ask of Him, and if ye would count the bounty of Allah ye cannot reckon it. Lo! man is verily a wrong doer, an ingrate." (Ibrahim : 32-34)

"Hast thou not seen how Allah causeth the night to pass into the day and causeth the day to pass into the night, and hath subdued the sun and the moon (to do their work), each running unto an appointed term; and that Allah is Informed of what ye do? That (is so) because Allah, He is the True, and that which they invoke beside Him is the False, and because Allah, He is the Sublime, the Great." (Luqman : 29-30)

A  Moroccan daily newspaper has quoted a source at the last edition of the Asilah Festival as saying : "In the Arab region there are around 600 satellite TV channels, and more than 70% of Arab people sit up to four hours daily in front of their TV screens. Some statistics show that in 2007 these TV channels swamped their televiewers with nearly 630 billion images." What about America and Europe?! How could one "think" with so many images falling like an avalanche over one's mind?

A sahabi (companion of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh)) was once travelling with other sahabis in the Arabean desert when he said to them: "Let's sit down and believe for an hour"! these sahabis were all believers,  they worshipped God night and day. But that's not like sitting down in the heart of the desert and thinking silently and wondering aloud. The image of God is then clearer, much clearer, and the greatness of God is brighter than the sun, sweeter than the moon in the eyes of young lovers.

So how long will it be before you go to the woods (with no cam, no walkman, no cigarettes), with just a mind and a heart, and two feet willing to go from place to place, and eyes willing to look at beautiful flowers -small flowers- hiding behind small rocks that few people care to glance at? In the woods look at the fallen leaves, and touch them, scrutinize them; look at the insects, look for migrant birds, listen to their twitter, and remember God's words:

"And with Him are the keys of the invisible. None but He knoweth them. And He knoweth what is in the land and the sea. Not a leaf falleth but He knoweth it, not a grain amid the darkness of the earth, naught of wet or dry but (it is noted) in a clear record." (Al-An'am : 59)

"There is not an animal in the earth, nor a flying creature flying on two wings, but they are peoples like unto you. We have neglected nothing in the Book (of Our decrees). Then unto their Lord they will be gathered." (Al-An'am : 38)

"Have they not seen the birds obedient in mid-air? None holdeth them save Allah. Lo! herein, verily, are portents for a people who believe." (An-Nahl : 79)

"Hast thou not seen that Allah causeth water to fall from the sky, and We produce therewith fruit of divers hues; and among the hills are streaks white and red, of divers hues, and (others) raven black; And of men and beasts and cattle, in like manner, divers hues? The erudite among His bondsmen fear Allah alone. Lo! Allah is Mighty, Forgiving." (Fatir : 27-28)

"And thou seest the hills thou deemest solid flying with the flight of clouds: the doing of Allah Who perfecteth all things. Lo! He is Informed of what ye do." (An-Naml : 88)

"What aileth you that ye hope not toward Allah for dignity, When He created you by (divers) stages? See ye not how Allah hath created seven heavens in harmony, And hath made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a lamp? And Allah hath caused you to grow as a growth from the earth, And afterward He maketh you return thereto, and He will bring you forth again, a (new) forthbringing. And Allah hath made the earth a wide expanse for you, That ye may thread the valley ways thereof." (Nuh : 13-20)

"Allah created you from dust, then from a little fluid, then He made you pairs (the male and female). No female beareth or bringeth forth save with His knowledge. And no one groweth old who groweth old, nor is aught lessened of his life, but it is recorded in a Book. Lo! that is easy for Allah." (Fatir : 11)

"Lo! in the heavens and the earth are portents for believers. And in your creation, and all the beasts that He scattered in the earth, are portents for a folk whose faith is sure. And the difference of night and day and the provision that Allah sendeth down from the sky and thereby quickeneth the earth after her death, and the ordering of the winds, are portents for a people who have sense." (Al-Jathiya : 3-5)

"Allah it is Who hath made the sea of service unto you that the ships may run thereon by His command, and that ye may seek of His bounty, and that haply ye may be thankful; And hath made of service unto you whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth; it is all from Him. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who reflect." (Al-Jathiya : 12-13)

"This is clear indication for mankind, and a guidance and a mercy for a folk whose faith is sure." (Al-Jathiya : 20)

"And He it is who spread out the earth and placed therein firm hills and flowing streams, and of all fruits be placed therein two spouses (male and female). He covereth the night with the day. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who take thought. And in the Earth are neighboring tracts, vineyards and ploughed lands, and date palms, like and unlike, which are watered with one water. And We have made some of them to excel others in fruit. Lo! herein verily are portents for people who have sense." (Ar-Ra'd : 3-4)

"Who hath appointed the earth as a bed and hath threaded roads for you therein and hath sent down water from the sky and thereby We have brought forth divers kinds of vegetation, (Saying): Eat ye and feed your cattle. Lo! herein verily are portents for men of thought." (Ta-ha : 53-54)

"Who hath created seven heavens in harmony. Thou (Muhammad) canst see no fault in the Beneficent One's creation; then look again: Canst thou see any rifts? Then look again and yet again, thy sight will return unto thee weakened and made dim." (Al-Mulk : 3-4)

"Say: Have ye thought, if Allah made night everlasting for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is a God beside Allah who could bring you light? Will ye not then hear? Say: Have ye thought, if Allah made day everlasting for you till the Day of Resurrection, who is a God beside Allah who could bring you night wherein ye rest? Will ye not then see? Of His mercy hath He appointed for you night and day that therein ye may rest, and that ye may seek His bounty, and that haply ye may be thankful." (Al-Qasas : 71-73)

"Let man consider his food: How We pour water in showers, Then split the earth in clefts, And cause the grain to grow therein, And grapes and green fodder, And olive trees and palm trees, And garden closes of thick foliage, And fruits and grasses: Provision for you and your cattle." (Abasa : 25-32)

"This is the Creation of Allah. Now show me that which those (ye worship) beside Him have created. Nay, but the wrong doers are in error manifest!" (Luqman :11)

"Hast thou not seen that Allah, He it is Whom all who are in the heavens and the earth praise; and the birds in their flight? Of each He knoweth verily the worship and the praise; and Allah is Aware of what they do." (An-Nur : 41)

Yes, Allah is Aware of what you do: while you are there, alone, in that part of the woods, or countryside, He will be watching you:

"And thou (Muhammad) art not occupied with any business and thou recitest not a lecture from this (Scripture), and ye (mankind) perform no act, but We are Witness of you when ye are engaged therein. There is no changing the Words of Allah, that is the Supreme Triumph." (Yunus : 61-64)

Then remember God's words to you, Man:

"See ye not how Allah hath made serviceable unto you whatsoever is in the skies and whatsoever is in the earth and hath loaded you with His favors both without and within? Yet of mankind is he who disputeth concerning Allah, without knowledge or guidance or a Scripture giving light." (Luqman : 20)

"And walk not in the earth exultant. Lo! thou canst not rend the earth, nor canst thou stretch to the height of the hills." (Al-Isra : 37)

"O man! What hath made thee careless concerning thy Lord, the Bountiful, Who created thee, then fashioned, then proportioned thee? Into whatsover form He will, He casteth thee"  (Al-Infitar :6-8)

"Is not the time ripe for the hearts of those who believe to submit to Allah's reminder and to the truth which is revealed" (Al-Hadid : 16)

And if you don't yet know God, then let Him introduce Himself to you:

"He is Allah, than whom there is no other God, the Knower of the invisible and the visible. He is the Beneficent, the Merciful. He is Allah, than whom there is no other God, the Sovereign Lord the Holy One, Peace, the Keeper of Faith, the Guardian, the Majestic, the Compeller, the Superb. Glorified be Allah from all that they ascribe as partner (unto Him).  He is Allah, the Creator, the Shaper out of naught, the Fashioner. His are the most beautiful names. All that is in the heavens and the earth glorifieth Him, and He is the Mighty, the Wise." (Al-Hashr : 22-24)

Wouldn't you love to hear these words said to you at the last moment in your life, when you are about to be buried and forgotten:

"But ah! thou soul at peace! Return unto thy Lord, content in His good pleasure! Enter thou among My bondmen! Enter thou My Garden!" (Al-Fajr : 27-30)

Then, keep in touch with God,...

"And be thou not of the neglectful." (Al-A'raf : 205)

...and keep thinking of this:

"Hast thou not seen how Allah hath sent down water from the sky and hath caused it to penetrate the earth as water springs, and afterward thereby produceth crops of divers hues; and afterward they wither and thou seest them turn yellow; then He maketh them chaff. Lo! herein verily is a reminder for men of understanding." (Az-Zumar : 21)

For many years I used to watch our national football team’s matches with beating heart. That is no more the case now. I stopped caring about our national team eight years ago when I was sickened by the attitudes of some of our (former) football stars who would put their income and privileges above "the honour of the country". Now I don’t even know the name of a single player in the national squad. Now I can understand the Libyan Leader Muammar al-Gaddafi  who, in an old interview with a French magazine, sarcastically likened football to cockfighting. But Gaddafi later changed his mind. When Morocco qualified for the second round in the Mexico 1986 FIFA World Cup, Gaddafi gave a generous gift to the Moroccan team, which was the first African and Arab squad to have gone that far.

Libya too has its own national football team, and Lybians –like Moroccans– still love football. In the 9th Pan Arab Games, 1999 (Jordan), a football match between Libya and Iraq ended with bloodshed in the stadium and in the streets of Amman. Neither side wanted to lose their honour.

Football, which began as a game to be played for fun, became, among other things, a source of honour for the winners and dishonour for the losers. And so did Tour de France, which began as "a publicity measure (...) to promote sales of the rival L'Auto, ancestor to the present L'équipe."

In the last edition of Tour de France, a Luxemburgian journalist at the end of his career shed tears of joy when Kim Kirchen became the first Luxemburgian cyclist ever to have won a stage in this prestigious competition. It was the Spanish Sastre , not Kim, who finally carried off the coveted trophey. On his return to his hometown, Sastre received a hero's welcome.

Many Italians felt great when they saw Riccardo Ricco (Cobra), an Italian cyclist, win more than a stage in this Tour de France, but when he was excluded from the competition for doping, those same Italians called him a traitor.

When an athlete wins a gold medal in an international competition, the national anthem is played in honour of his /her country. Perhaps that’s why some states "buy" star athletes to compete in their name. But does it do an athlete’s country honour when he/she cheats in order to get a gold medal ? Presiden Bush said Marion Jones set a bad example to American youth.

Does a country really need to associate itself with the sporting achievement of one of its individual citizens ? Recently, regional and international media featured a Saudi youth planting a Saudi flag on top of the Everest. What if that Saudi national had lost his life before achieving his aim ? Would anybody have cared about him ? A K2 survivor was quoted as saying : "I now realise that they're all dead, they're all dead (...) I'm at base camp. I'm truly happy, to be here finally and to be alive."

Why ? Why all this ? Is it wise to lose one’s life in such a way ? Does a small country like the Islamic Republic of Mauritania need daring soldiers to carry out a coup d'etat, or teniss stars to compete with Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova?

Ethiopia was honoured by its legendary long-distance runner Haile Gebrselassie, but then there’s still hunger –not to say famine– in a great part of the country. Argentina  was honoured by its football stars, such as Maradona, but then Argentinians took to the streets brandishing empty saucepans.

I once read about a "World Snail Racing Championships" in which each competing snail wore the colours of a different national flag. Is this pure fun, or rather a subtle form of national extremism ? Is it reasonable for a nation to make its honour conditional on the outcome of a football match, a long-distance race, or a snail race?

Some states have brought the spirit of competition into another arena : Faith. While Côte d'Ivoire was facing growing economic problems, the late Félix Houphouët-Boigny, with the help of his sister, constructed the Basilica of Our Lady of Peace of Yamoussoukro, the largest Christian church in the world, at a cost of $300 million. Now Algeria has just signed with a German-Tunisian group a contract to to build  a mosque with the tallest minaret ever. Will the Guinness World Records become more sacred than the Koran? One shudders at the thought.

Gossipers have alleged that the 2008 Olympic Games are being used to tighten the grip of the Communist Party. Only Allah knows whether this is true. However, cool-headed Chinese analysts claim that the Chinese people have been waiting for this chance for more than a century to improve their image in the world. After being humiliated by the Japanese occupation of China's northeast and other historical happenings, the Chinese now want to show the world that they are worthy of the world's respect and admiration.

It is easy to understand the anger of the people who were
moved from their homes to make way for the Olympic Games venues. And it's equally easy to understand the excitement of millions of Chinese people about their country hosting the Games. These Chinese are happy getting such attention, such a unique opportunity to present their culture and civilization to the rest of the world. As proof, the Beijing dwellers accepted without a murmur their government's dress code DO's and DONT's during the Games. The international media featured thousands of Chinese citizens from all over the country waiting days, sleeping on the streets, just for the sake of getting a ticket for the Games. Millions of Chinese turned out in many Chinese cities to see the torch. But, wait a minute! What about money?

Normally, many states (create and then) exploit people's interest in sports because sports provide advertisers with a golden chance, and advertisement helps economic growth, which, in turn, helps the State coffers. This is neither totally false nor totally true. South Korea and Mexico, for example, suffered economic disasters even after hosting the
1988 Summer Olympics and the 1986 FIFA World Cup respectively. Besides, China has spent $35-40 billion on improved  infrastructure on these Games. So it doesn't look as if China needs the Olympic Games for money. Now even China-based international correspondents are increasingly stressing the fact that it's more a matter of national pride than anything else. They are now saying that the Games are meant to bring international prestige and recognition to the Chinese nation. So all China has to do now is charm the world.

Once China has bedazzled the world with its magical Opening Ceremony , it will also dazzle them with the number of gold medals its athletes will harvest. China
will not be measured only against the United States,
Western Europe and Russia, but also against
poor countries such as Barbados and
Haiti. Is it China's fault if it entered the competition
with more than 600 athletes while Iraq, for example,
had only two participants? Is it China's fault if tiny
states came to the Games to compete with the giants?

Mongolia, (North & South) Korea, Vietnam, Nepal and Burma, which are taking part in the Beijing Games as sovereign states, were all at some point in history part of the Chinese Empire. The next Olympiad will be held in Great Britain, whose nationals used to put at the entrance to one of their parks on Chinese soil a sign that read: "Dogs and Chinese Not Allowed". There's absolutely nothing abnormal about this, though. All nations go through ups and downs. Great Britain, on which the Sun Never Set when China bowed to Western powers, is now a much smaller power. Portugal, whose sailors were once the masters of much of the world's seas, is now much, much smaller than Britain. Paris, which hosted the 1924 Summer Olympics, was then invaded by Hitler's troops. Berlin, which hosted the 1936 Summer Olympics, was then invaded by the Allies. All these nations are now anxious to see their national anthem performed at the Beijing Games as many times as possible. In sum, whatever the state we're in, it's never irreversible.

Every nation has its hour of glory, and China has every right to show off its power and civilization at its hour of glory. We all tend to pride ourselves on our achievements. All that is preditible:

"Know that the life of this world is only play, and idle talk, and pageantry, and boasting among you, and rivalry in respect of wealth and children; as the likeness of vegetation after rain, whereof the growth is pleasing to the husbandman, but afterward it drieth up and thou seest it turning yellow then it becometh straw. And in the Hereafter there is grievous punishment, and (also) forgiveness from Allah and His good pleasure, whereas the life of the world is but matter of illusion." (Al-Hadid : 20)

"See how We prefer one above another, and verily the Hereafter will be greater in degrees and greater in preferment." (Al-Isra : 21)

Now the question is, what's the use of a country's honour if this country's individual citizens lose their own honour?

I am not going to talk about dictatorships. But in Japan -an unquestionably democratic state- "Japanese lawyers are rallying behind a postman whose boss told him he had to shave off his moustache to comply with grooming standards for letter carriers," according to The Age OddSpotBen  is one of those who told the story of that Italian bride whose wedding-dress came apart at the seams and fell to the ground in front of her future husband and wedding guests, leaving her half naked. These two people were understandably hurt in their dignity, all the more so since their ordeals made worldwide headlines. But there are millions of anonymous people who are hurt in their dignity on a daily basis. In many African, Caribbean and Asian countries, some of which will certainly get gold medals at the Beijing Games, there are so many people humbled by poverty and hunger. Will these people be honoured with a handful of gold medals?

Another question is, will the American Subprime victims be interested at all in the current Olympic Games? While President Bush went to Beijing to support the American athletes, who are supposed to honour their country, there will still be too many American citizens who will continue to feel that they have been cheated by some of their fellow Americans, who had tricked them into taking on risky home loans and signing mortgages beyond their means.

Sometimes, people do harm to their own families. The President of Austria as well as many Austrian people felt ashamed when the world came to know the story of the Austrian father who had kept his own daughter locked in the cellar of his home for more than two decades.

Yet another question is, do athletes really care about the honour of their country as much as they do about their personal glory? That doesn't seem to  always be the case--given the innumerable cases of doping, such as those mentioned above. Why so, one wonders? It's because man wants to be at the top wherever there is room for competition. Even when a country's security is at stake, you'd find the soldiers of that country more worried about their medals, promotion and worldly acquisitions than the honour of their country. Read, for example, David Irving's
The Trail of the Fox, a biography of German general Erwin Rommel. Read any soldier's autobiography, any politician's memoirs, it's always the I-was-I-did story. Even those who used rape as a weapon against their enemy will have something to boast about.

"
Beautified for mankind is love of the joys (that come) from women and offspring, and stored up heaps of gold and silver, and horses branded (with their mark), and cattle and land. That is comfort of the life of the world. Allah! With Him is a more excellent abode. Say: Shall I inform you of something better than that? For those who keep from evil, with their Lord, are Gardens underneath which rivers flow, and pure companions, and contentment from Allah. Allah is Seer of His bondmen, Those who say: Our Lord! Lo! we believe. So forgive us our sins and guard us from the punishment of Fire; The steadfast, and the truthful, and the obedient, those who spend (and hoard not), those who pray for pardon in the watches of the night." (Al-i'Imran : 14-17)

"O mankind! Lo! We have created you male and female, and have made nations and tribes that ye may know one another. Lo! the noblest of you, in the sight of Allah, is the best in conduct. Lo! Allah is Knower, Aware." (Al-Hujurat : 13)

"Whoso obeyeth Allah and the messenger, they are with those unto whom Allah hath shown favor, of the Prophets and the saints and the martyrs and the righteous. The best of company are they! Such is the bounty of Allah, and Allah sufficeth as knower." (An-Nisaa : 69-70)

"For this let (all) those strive who strive for bliss." (Al-Mutaffifoon : 26)

One last question: do all people care about their national stars? Well, the legendary
Pele (!) has recently been  attacked and robbed at gunpoint.

"Then praise be to Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth, the Lord of the Worlds. And unto Him (alone) belongeth majesty in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Mighty, the Wise." (Al-Jathiya : 36-37)

Libération's publication of a three-page interview with carla bruni sarkozy resulted in an increase of 40% in sales compared to an average Saturday. That increase in sales can easily be explained by people's interest in Carla's words. Some of Libération's editors and journalists, however, raised their eyebrows and said that the newspaper shouldn't have given such an opportunity to the glamourous wife of an unpopular president.

According to a Somalian website, commenting "The 'black apartheid era'", "One Congolese man recently told a local newspaper that, "As soon as (Nelson) Mandela dies– they'll kill all the foreigners." Yet, many voices criticized Nelson Mandela for not saying anything about the Xenophobic Violence that rocked parts of South Africa in May nor about the elections in Zimbabwe. But when the Nelson Mandela Foundation issued a statement condemning the "senseless violence" and Mandela himself finally spoke and condemned Robert Mugabe's leadership in Zimbabwe, some still said that his words weren't strong enough.

When the violence broke out in Tibet in March, the press rushed to hear the
Dalai Lama . But world journalists weren't as much interested in the Dalai Lama's words about the Tibet violence as in what French President Nikolas Sarkozy had to say about Carla Bruni at the beginning of this year. After long hours of waiting, the much-anticipated moment came at long last, and Nikolas declared: "What's between Carla and me is a real love story."

When the
Monica Lewinsky story was brought into the open, the whole world wanted to hear something from the mouth of Hilary. When she finally spoke, she said : "I never doubted Bill's love for me ? ever ? and I never doubted my faith and my commitment to our daughter and our extended family." With these words, Hilary was able to extricate herself from that nasty situation. But when she needed words more than ever before –namely during the campaign for the Democratic Party nomination– she apparently failed to find enough good words to secure her Party’s nomination.

It’s all about words. An electoral campaign is to a great extent a battle of words. There are words that sell well and words that sell badly. In a job interview, for example, your words will make or break you.

Words are everyone’s merchandise. What did
William Shakespeare do ? He sold words. Now Nora Roberts sells words of romance. Stephen King sells words that make readers’s flesh creep. J.K. Rowling sells words that make children dream.

Writers are not the only word-sellers, though. Teachers, comedians, politicians, journalists, lawyers, psychotherapists, sports commentators––all sell words. But word prices vary. The price of lyrics written for a famous American singer may be higher than the price of a local radio station. The price of a Bill Clinton lecture may be higher than the price of an engineer’s car.

Perhaps that’s why politicians hire speechwriters. Not everyone could have written for
John F. Kennedy something like, "Ask not what your country can do for you––ask what you can do for your country."

But somtimes politicians have to find the right words for themselves. Every evening many a politician sit at their desks and jot down words –which necessarily have to be jingly words– about their glory-in-progress. That’s how memoirs are written, and that’s why some memoirs can bring in millions of dollars.

I don’t remember the exact words, but I once heard a French expert say on RFI something like, "From my own experience in the police I noticed that the kids who came to blows did so simply because they couldn’t express their anger in words. So I said to myself, ‘Why not just teach kids and young boys words that they can use when they are angry or when they don’t agree with each other. That will help them avoid fighting !'"

Better speak than fight. That’s what grown-ups need to apply to themselves, too. Many spouses use drugs and all sorts of medicines to just calm themselves down because their partners don’t tell them "tender words" –let alone bring them a rose or a postcard. But what kind of words should a husband say to his wife ? Some working wives find their husbands’ words tasteless, uninteresting, not romantic enough, because they hear so many nice words from colleagues at work, and even in the street. These women would prefer "benign harassment" to words from their own husbands who aren’t creative enough.

Perhaps that's because we are exposed to less and less poetry. Most of the songs we hear today only speak about the body. "Get down, baby !" is what you’ll hear in most songs. No more romance in our songs. Romance speaks to the soul and about the soul, but modern life has made the body more important than the soul.

No wonder, then, that
Poetry is becoming a Business. Special Occasion Poetry, for example, offers clients "poems for every imaginable occasion. From valentines to your loved ones to bar mitzvahs, mother's day and more". But how many readers of poetry (or romance) today will see the difference between "She loves him hatingly" and "she loves him hatingly" ?

Isn’t it a shame that we should pay for a
Poem or a Joke just as we would pay for a novel ? Fortunately, there are so many poems, so many jokes, and even so many novels, posted on the Internet for free. People’s craze for communication is far from extinct, although the good old times of carefully, beautifully written Letters (like those written by Napoleon Bonaparte to Josephine ) are gone. Now we chat, we email, we SMS. Yet, it’s quite the same effect. Sarkozys alleged SMS to his ex-wife Cecilia grabbed the headlines in France.

Words have not lost their power despite all the technological advancement. Even when you are watching a football match, or any game, on TV, you’ll still need a commentator to say something about what you’re watching. There’s always someone telling you what to see, how to see what you see, and what to feel about it. And if you aren’t satisfied with what the commentator has said, you can immediately go to your PC and join the community of "virtual commentators" –through blogs or discussion forums– to tell others what you saw from your own perspective and what you felt about it.

Now even those professional TV and radio commentators
have their own spaces on the Web, where for the first time they can meet with their virtual audience and get feedback on their job.
